Geography: Geology Of Argentina

Geology of Argentina

The Argentine mainland is included in four major geological regions: the Patagonian massif, which occupies the south of the country, is a basement from the Precambrian times; the system of the Andes, to the west originated by the Andean Folding; and the Brasilia Shield or Massif, whose southwestern rim crosses the west of Mesopotamia, the stable basement of the South American subcontinent, among which was formed by the accumulation of marine and volcanic sediments from the other three regions, the Chaco-Pampean plain.

Argentina's geology is dominated by the metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Andes to the west and a large sedimentary basin to the east. A small, northeastern section of the country extends into the Río de la Plata craton.
